Immigration and free movement policies within the EU have been challenged by an increasing number of migrants from outside European borders. At the same time, the failure to provide working solutions to multicultural problems within Member States means that States may need to rethink their integration policies.

In these areas, New Direction addresses in particular:

  • Future Migration trends in an enlarged EU
  • Economic needs
  • The impact of EU policy and the ability of Member States to control their own borders
  • Any need for adjustment of the EU’s free movement policy?
  • Integrating the Roma
  • The Roma population across Europe
  • Cross-border migration trends
  • Encouraging change both within host societies and within the Roma communities
  • Use of EU integration funds – NGOs and the Roma issue
